A yummy liqure that is great to use in Martini's. Also a wonderful holiday gift. Allow for 4 weeks to sit.
- Soak mint leaves (or extract) in the vodka for 14 days, shaking once daily.
- Strain out mint leaves.
- Mix sugar and water in pot.
- Heat at moderatly high heat and cook 5 minutes.
- Let cool, then add to vodka.
- Put into a glass jar and sit in a cool, dark place for 2 more weeks.
- Add green food colouring (until it reaches appealing colour).
- Place in bottle and enjoy or label for a gift.
CrÃ¨me De Menthe As with other â€œcrÃ¨me deâ€� liqueurs, this term comes from the French phrase â€œcrÃ¨me de la crÃ¨meâ€� meaning the â€œbest of the bestâ€� and does not mean the liqueur contains any cream. â€œMentheâ€� is the French for mint. To make their CrÃ¨me de Menthe liqueur, De Kuyper use the oil extracted from fresh mint leaves which is then distilled and infused into a fine spirit. Other ingredients according to De Kuyperâ€™s own recipe are then added â€“ such as sugar and colouring. Once the blend has been made, the mixture is then allowed to marry for several weeks to develop a fuller flavour. Generally the De Kuyper CrÃ¨me de Menthe referred to on the in-the-spirit website is the Green style unless otherwise specified. Some liqueur producers make a clear version â€“ often referred to as â€œwhiteâ€� but this is very difficult to find and is most likely to be found in the collection of an exclusive cocktail bar rather than in your local supermarket.
This is a VERY good recipe however, as one reviewer noticed "no creme anywhere", so I added one recipe of sweetened condensed milk #14062 and only added 1 cup of sugar.
Just a little note - if you buy Creme de Menthe in a bottle there is no cream nor does it have a creamy texture. I looks like a clear, green liquor :-) Creme de Cacao isn't creamy either!
