The first time mine was grainy too. The second time, I used powdered sugar instead and it turned out just like fudge! Wonderful.

Yes its grainy, but it has a delicious flavour. One tip though, spread this on your cake as soon as it has thickened and while it is still hot. As soon as it hits the cake it will start to harden so you need to work quickly!

I am extremely happy with this recipe, especially considering it doesn't call for eggs or milk. I halved the recipe and it was just enough for 12 cupcakes (with extra frosting on each). I boiled the mixture about 2 minutes rather than one. While the result was a big grainy, I like it that way. I don't think I've ever had frosting that calls for granulated sugar be perfectly smooth -- I think it's just a more old-fashioned taste, that I personally enjoy.

Excellent easy to make frosting. I used it for Black Russian Cake II, an excellent cake.

This recipe has a wonderful fudge flavour but it's texture is more like a spreadable fudge than a frosting. I followed the recipe exactly as written and it turned out quite gritty. I think I might like this on a nice brownie but not on a cake. I'm continuing my search for the perfect chocolate frosting...

Lovely and sweet frosting that went really well with a dark, less sweet chocolate cake! I'm not adding stars because I didn't follow the instructions exactly - when beating the frosting I had a cat related crisis I had to attend to, and hence the frosting just sat there cooling for several minutes! I think this is why it turned out a bit grainy. So, keep beating people! :-) You might think that nothing is happening when the frosting is still hot, but trust me, it will thicken up very nicely! Will give this another go the next time I need a lactose-free frosting, and will have someone watch the kitties that time!! ;-) Thanks for a lovely recipe!
